PESEB, Tuesday, May 2, 2017 — Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) showed dominance as defending champions to take the game 3-0 against Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) in the National A Division Volleyball Championship.

This is the third time in a row NYJC have gotten to the final in these three years. They are the two-time defending champions and look to defend their title against Dunman High School in the final.

On the other hand, HCI will fight for third place against Anderson Junior College after this loss.

NYJC got off to a good start. They played well defensively to cover all spots on the floor making it hard for HCI to find an angle at offense. While HCI were able to get their spikes off, NYJC were able to force those spikes into spots they wanted with good covers all match long. NYJC dominated 25-5 in the first set.

In the second, NYJC started to make some errors on their plays which HCI quickly pounced on for quick points. However, the defending champions were able to regroup and regain their composure after talking it through during timeouts. NYJC went back into the game with poise and handled the game.

NYJC proved why they were the defending champions as they closed out the remaining two matches with their precision play to eventually take the game 3-0.

NYJC captain, Ho Sue Li (NYJC #8), commented, “I think we did our defense really well today. Our team spirit was there and we played as a team today. Instead of caring about individual plays, we focused on team play and that is something I think that was done well today.”

“To my team, we have really worked very hard and been through a lot of challenges. The journey wasn’t smooth sailing with a lot of ups and downs but we fought hard. Being a small team with little substitution, we have to be careful. I hope we play our very best in the finals and defend our title.”
