Bishan Stadium, Tuesday, April 18, 2017 — Jezebel Koh led a Hwa Chong Institution 1-2 in the A girls’ high jump at the 58th National Schools Track and Field Championship, posting a personal best on her way to a third-straight divisional title in as many years.

Jezebel failed in her attempts at 1.58m, but 1.56m was enough for the gold medal, ahead of schoolmate Choun Ray Yi’s 1.54m and Victoria Junior College’s Fatimah Zahra Bte Mohd Rafique’s 1.52m. Jezebel won the previous two B division titles as a Singapore Sports School student.

“I was aiming for a personal best and wasn’t so much focused on the medal,” said Jezebel, who was a picture of calm throughout the competition even when she cleared her title-winning height, a contrast to her competitors’ profuse expressions of joy. “I have to remain calm, otherwise it would affect my other jumps.”

Jezebel’s win added to Hwa Chong’s encouraging showing in the jumps this year. Ernest Ong jumped 13.95m to handily win the A boys triple jump gold medal, relegating Raffles Institution’s Toh Wei Yu to silver. Wei Yu won the long jump event by one centimetre.

The Hwa Chong trio of Saciin Esan Bin Maran, Kyler Ong and Low Jun Yu swept the B boys pole vault event, with Saciin winning gold with a 4.00m clearance.

There was another clean sweep of the podium spots by CHIJ St Nicholas’ Girls School in the B girls triple jump last week. Kelly Chan jumped 10.84m for gold ahead of schoolmates Tan Tse Teng and Cham Jay Yin who both posted 10.75m.
