Bishan Stadium, Tuesday, April 18, 2017 — After staying shoulder-to-shoulder with her two nearest rivals from Raffles Institution for more than half the race, Victoria Junior College’s Phoebe Kee pulled away with less than two laps remaining, coasting to victory in the A girls’ 3000m at the 58th National Schools Track and Field Championships.

“I didn’t know how fast to go at the start, because I wanted to make sure I had enough for a strong finish,” said Phoebe after the rain-delayed race.

She posted a personal best 11:05.00, finishing the race almost a full 10 seconds ahead of RI’s Toh Ting Xuan who ran 11:15.37 and Elaine Quah’s 11:20.11. Phoebe’s 3000m victory added to the cross country individual gold medal she won last month, and sets her up for a “Grand Slam” of distance titles, with the 2000m steeplechase still to come.

Phoebe’s VJC schoolmate Syed Hussein has also been similarly dominating the distance events among the boys this year, adding the 5000m title to his cross country win last month.
