Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, March 27, 2017 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) proved too much for Chung Cheng High School (Main) (CCHMS) to handle as they outscored their rival steadily to secure a 34-26 victory in the National B Division Basketball Championship.

Patricia Orenza (SCGS #7) had a game high of 18 points.

Ng Ruo Yin (CCHMS #1) and Erika Sim (CCHMS #6) led their team with eight points each.

With this win, SCGS improve to a perfect 3-0 win-loss record in Round 1 and top Group Q. They will advance to Round 2 to play Nanyang Girls’ High, Dunman Secondary, and Jurong Secondary.

However, Chung Cheng drop to a 1-2 win-loss record after defeating Guangyang Secondary and losing to Unity Secondary. They will not advance to Round 2.

The first quarter saw SCGS immediately working on their defence but CCHMS secured their first basket easily by cutting into the paint. An open Nadia Ghani (SCGS #9) replied back.

Clearly bigger than her opponents, Dylen Serrano (SCGS #11) easily grabbed both offensive and defensive rebounds while boxing out, but SCGS still ended the quarter trailing 5-7.

With Ng Ruo Yin (CCHMS #1) leading the gameplay, she sank another three to pull away with the lead. Paired with Gwen Ng’s (CCHMS #11) intercepting passes, SCGS fell back. This was countered by fastbreaks from Patricia Orenza (SCGS #7).

At halftime, SCGS were up 18-16.

In the third quarter, SCGS heated up and headed straight for baskets while CCHMS remained open for three-point opportunities.

With SCGS capitalising on backdoors and layups, their opponents were unable to catch up.

Dominating her opponents with speed, Patricia Orenza (SCGS #7) easily sent shots into the basket, further widening the gap and ending the third with a three-point, 24-21 lead.

Down to the last quarter, Patricia Orenza (SCGS #7) and Dylen Serrano (SCGS #11) paired up with pick and rolls to combine for 10 points while limiting their opponents to five.

This proved beneficial as SCGS secured a 34-26 victory over Chung Cheng.

SCGS captain Patricia Orenza (#7) said, “Even though our offence wasn’t really getting baskets, we still fought very hard for our defence and didn’t allow the scores to fall behind too much. We just came back stronger in the second half and fought back.”
