Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, March 23, 2017 — Jurong Secondary (JS) proved too much for Anglican High (AH) to handle as they dominated on both the offensive and defensive end of the floor to cruise to a 45-22 victory in the National B Division Basketball Championship.

Siti Suhaila (#11) and Tan Kangyi (#12) of Jurong had a joint game-high 10 points each.

With this win, Jurong currently have a 2-0 win-loss record. They are first in Group S and look to play Zhonghua Secondary next.

Anglican High drop to a 1-1 win-loss record and are tied with Yishun Town Secondary for second. They will play against Yishun Town next and have to win to advance.

As soon as the ball was tipped, Jurong got to work. Jurong had the height advantage and made use of that to grab several offensive rebounds. These offensive rebounds led to second and third opportunities for Jurong as they converted these chances into points.

Anglican High, lacking in height, were not able to counter the tall centers of Jurong. They were also shooting very poorly, missing shots and layups which they would usually make. This led to opportunities for Jurong as they further widened their lead.

The first half ended with Jurong up 28-8.

Refusing to give up, Anglican High upped their defensive intensity and hustled for every loose ball. They were able to force turnovers and contain Jurong.

However, their poor shooting performance continued. In spite of that, Lee Li Xuan (AH #9) of Anglican High continued to play hard. Despite being the smallest on the court, she did not let her size faze her. She drove with tenacity into the midst of the giants to force the closing of the lane and get her team mates the open shots.

Despite her efforts, Anglican High could not capitalise and only managed to score 10 points from the numerous opportunities they had.

Jurong were still up 35-18 after the third quarter.

Having exhausted themselves in the third, Anglican High no longer stood a chance. With their stamina depleted, Jurong were able to exploit the lapses in Anglican High’s defense to increase their lead.

Alicia Quek (JS #9) of Jurong said, “We did well in our defense today. We denied and stood between the ball and basket so there was no easy entry for Anglican to the basket. However, we have to improve on our box out and also we dribbled too much and didn’t pass when there were open forwards at the front for fast-breaks.”

Her teammate Valarie Lim (JS #5) added, “We won both our games, let’s continue to fight hard.”
