OCBC Arena, Monday, February 13, 2017 — Three-point plays from Christ Church (CC) Secondary allowed them to beat Catholic High (CH) 52-34 and claim their second victory in Round 2 of the North Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship.

With this win, Christ Church have a 2-0 win-loss record after previously defeating Edgefield 78-66. They will play Ahmad Ibrahim next.

On the other hand, Catholic High drop to a 1-1 win-loss record after defeating North Vista Secondary 52-48 previously. They will play Punggol next.

Oscar Ong (CC #28) had a game high of 14 points while his teammates Eugene Jr (CC #23) and Pan Minghui (CC #22) had 12 and 10 each.

The first quarter started with Catholic High on the defensive and forcing Christ Church to a corner, but they carried on passing, with Ernest Kwek (CC #32) and Eugene Jr (CC #23) shooting in two open three-pointer shots each to take the lead.

Christ Church shot well to score 14 points, limiting Catholic High to only four points in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Christ Church hustling, and Oscar Ong (CC #28) was left wide open to score an easy under-basket just one minute in.

Christ Church then went ahead with the 2-on-1 defence but were unsuccessful as Catholic High were patient and kept on sinking deep two-pointers.

With Catholic High warming up, they adopted the 2-on-1 defence and managed to deny two Christ Church shots.

Even though Catholic High had two turnovers in their favour, they air-balled both of their shots away, giving Christchurch chances to regain the ball.

The halftime ended with Catholic High trailing by 16 points at 10-26.

Joshua Lim (CH #11) sank a three-pointer just 10 seconds into the third quarter while Chua Kaixuan (CH #7) daringly drove into the paint after seeing the loopholes in Christ Church’s defence. He scored two baskets and denied Christ Church any possession to force them into a time-out.

Catholic High stepped up on their defence to pressure Christ Church but they gave away four fouls to give their opponents six free-throw points.

However, Catholic High’s shooting continuously missed open baskets, and they ended the third quarter trailing Christ Church 26-40.

Down to the final quarter, the Christ Church defence was slack on rebounds and they also gave Catholic High three turnovers. Catholic High also gave hints of a come back as they exploited gaps in the Christ Church defence.

However, Christ Church upped their defence and forced three successful fastbreaks, eventually sealing the 52-34 win.

Christ Church captain Oscar Ong (CC #28) said, “Our willingness to fight was good during the game. However, our turnovers allowed them (Catholic High) to score many baskets.”
