OCBC Arena, Monday, February 6, 2017 — North Vista Secondary (NV) rolled past Maris Stella High (MS) with their defense to dominate 97-13.
With this win, North Vista have a perfect win-loss record of 5-0, having previously defeated Marsiling Secondary, Montfort Secondary, Woodlands Ring Secondary, and Hougang Secondary. They will advance to Round 2 of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship as the winner of group B.
On the other hand, this loss marks the end of the season for Maris Stella. They also lost all their previous games to Hougang, Woodlands Ring and Montfort, with their sole win coming against Marsiling.
Without delay, North Vista got to work at the start. The intensity of their full court press defense was high, forcing countless turnovers from Maris Stella. With their skillful dribbling and speed, North Vista converted all those turnovers into points.
Against such a strong opponent, Maris Stella struggled to counter the full court press. They ended up throwing the ball into the hands of North Vista.
North Vista executed their full court defense to perfection. They turned defense into offense and 11 out of 12 players scored off those turnovers.
Jayson Yanoria (NV #24), Tiong Chuan Yao (NV #9) and Ye Hui (NV #7) were in double digit figures, with Ye Hui (NV #7) leading the charge. He scored a game-high 18 points, followed closely behind by teammate Tiong Chuan Yao (NV #9) with 17.
While Maris Stella tried to fight back by increasing the intensity of their defense in the third quarter, it was not enough. North Vista overpowered Maris Stella and won 97-13.
Captain Ye Hui (NV #7) of North Vista said, “We played full court man and everyone did good. We hustled and kept running. Next round is the first seed death group. We might meet Presbyterian High or Woodgrove. We need to play harder.”
