OCBC Arena, Monday, February 06, 2017 — Presbyterian High (PH) were able to take the pressure from Catholic High (CH) to win 68-47.

Presbyterian High finish Round 1 unbeaten after earlier wins over Nan Chiau High, Compassvale, and Woodlands. They have a perfect 4-0 win-loss record and will enter the next round of the North Zone B Division Championship as winners of Group F.

Catholic High had wins over Nan Chiau High, Compassvale and Woodlands. This loss gives them a 3-1 record and they will enter the next round as the second-place finishers in the group.

The game started with a series of quick offensive plays by Presbyterian High. They scored on several occasions when they drove in. The ball movement was fast and smooth, allowing them to get the easy open shots.

Presbyterian High also shut down the Catholic High offense, making use of their bigger build and height to obstruct and alter shots.

The best defense is not to block but alter a shot, and Presbyterian High definitely succeeded as they contained Catholic High to only seven points in the first quarter while they scored 25.

Despite that, Catholic High increased the pace of their game and were able to get Presbyterian High to play to their tempo. They set up presses to force turnovers and scored off those turnovers.

Catholic High players also managed to catch the loopholes in the man to man defense in the second quarter and made many drives into the paint to score.

While there were many chances for Catholic high to score in the second quarter, their shots did not fall. They drove past their defenders many times but where it mattered, they failed to score.

After getting outscored 11-2 in the second quarter, Presbyterian High adjusted in the third and never looked back. They steadily increased their lead and eventually won 68-47 behind the team captain Dillion Yap’s (PH #7) 19 points and Aaron Chaw’s (PH #26) 16.

Presbyterian High team captain Dillion Yap (PH #7) said, “We did good at using our height well. Our opponents aren’t that tall. So using our height and size, we played on and were bound to get easy basket.

“However, in the second quarter, we tried to play man but failed. We didn’t help side and allowed opponent to drive. We also didn’t get rebounds well and allowed easy basket for them (Catholic High) to chase back.

“We might meet North Vista and Woodgrove in the second round, I hope we meet them and hopefully advance to semi-finals.”
