OCBC Arena, Friday, February 03, 2017 — Defense and hustle play of Woodlands Ring Secondary (WR) shone through against Maris Stella High (MS) which led to a 41-29 victory in the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Darryl Ong (WR #4) of Woodlands Ring had a game high of 12 points while his teammate Tan Hann Ming (WR #10) had 10.
This win gives them a 2-2 win-loss record after having previously lost to Marsiling Secondary 45-47 and North Vista Secondary 15-73, and beaten Hougang Secondary 38-19. Their next game will be against Montfort Secondary.
On the other hand, Maris Stella fall to a 1-4 record having beaten Marsiling 25-18, but losing the rest of their matches to Hougang, Montfort and Woodlands Ring. They will play their next game against North Vista.
It was a low-scoring start, with neither teams letting up and allowing the opposing team to score. There were many turnovers by both teams, as though they had not warmed up to the game yet. The first quarter ended with Maris Stella leading by a slim 7-6.
However in the third quarter, Woodlands Ring got their engine going. They went on with their half court press which led to many successful turnovers. They also capitalized on the turnovers, converting them to points for the team. With the success of their defense, Woodlands Ring went on to take the quarter 11-4.
Not letting that affect them, Maris Stella got more aggressive in the fourth to try to catch up to Woodlands Ring. However their shots did not fall despite many offensive opportunities. Coupled with the point difference created in the third quarter, Woodlands Ring eventually won 41-29.
