OCBC Arena, Friday, February 3, 2017 — Christ Church (CC) Secondary remained calm when Yishun Secondary (YS) turned on their offensive pressure and eventually won 60-47 in the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
With this win, Christ Church now have a perfect 5-0 win-loss record with victories over Anderson Secondary, Bowen Secondary, Chung Cheng High (Yishun) and Riverside Secondary and will advance to the second round.
Meanwhile, Yishun secured two victories against Riverside and Anderson, losing to Bowen and Christ Church. They have their final game against Chung Cheng (Yishun) and have to win to stand a chance to get into the next round.
Christ Church started off the game hot, scoring consecutively on fast-break points off turnovers from Yishun. Pan Ming Hui (CC #22) went coast to coast multiple times to rack up on the fast-break points.
With his speed and skillful maneuvers in traffic to score, he had 10 points in the first quarter alone and went on to have a game high of 18 points. This added up to Christ Church’s 19 first-quarter points.
Undaunted, Yishun went on a run in the third quarter. They upped the intensity of their defense and scored a three near the end of the quarter to close the gap to just three points.
However, Christ Church handled the situation well and tightened their defenses in the fourth quarter. They restricted Yishun to merely eight points in the fourth and scored 16 points themselves.
Yishun captain Ng Jun Xiang (YS #11) said, “I think our defense is definitely better than our first game against Bowen. We have played against Bowen, Anderson, and Riverside and Chung Cheng (Yishun) are next. For that we need to improve on our attack, because we keep missing open baskets.”
Oscar Ong (CC #28), captain of Christ Church, said, “It was quite poor performing, we could have done better this game. As a team, we got to build on our communication and defense. We need to step up as one when there’s a difficult challenge, give our best and be fearless. We are undefeated and I hope we keep winning.”
