Singapore, Thursday, October 20, 2016 — The organisers of the upcoming Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore, Ironman Asia, have announced a new 4:30am start time for both the full and half-marathon races.

In previous editions, the marathon starts were at 5:30am, and the half-marathon was flagged off on Sentosa.

For 2016, the marathon and half-marathon runners will start together at 4:30am on Orchard Road. The organisers will flag off runners in waves based on personal race timings. Runners who registered had to submit documents of past timings.

The marathon and half-marathon runners will run the same route for the first 12km before splitting at Fort Road. Both categories reunite at the 33km mark of the 42.195km route at Fort Road, but will be kept apart in separate lanes, according to the organisers.

Route maps for the 42km, 21km, and 10km races were also released.

In 2015, Mok Ying Ren was the fastest Singaporean with a time of 2hrs 43min 06sec. With a 4:30am start, that would see Mok hitting the finishing line at about 7:15am.

The slowest full marathon timing in 2015 was 8hrs 56min. Based on the new start time, that would see the runner come home at around 1:30pm.

The 10km race will start at 6:45am, half an hour earlier than last year. Runners in this category will get the chance to run up Sheares Avenue.

Registration remains open as slots have not been filled up. The number of full marathon finishers have seen a steady decline since 2011. The number of marathon finishers have gone from a high of 15,700 in 2011 to 8,800 in 2015, a drop of 44%.
