Hougang Sports Hall, Wednesday, May 4, 2016 – Meridian Junior College (MJC) defeated Tampines Junior College (TPJC) 6-0 in the National A Division Girls Floorball Championship.

Undefeated MJC next face Millenia Institute (MI) in the Round 1 but are already assured of a spot in the semi-finals after their fourth straight win. TPJC drop to a 1-3 win-loss record and will not be moving on to the semi-finals.

Nichole Khoo (MJC #24) led her team to victory with a game-high two goals.

MJC were aggressive in offence as Nichole Khoo (MJC #24) fired a shot just minutes into the game. TPJC had no choice but to focus on defence and had few chances to attack as MJC kept possession of the ball.

MJC were quick to shoot and had a few shots on target but they were saved by the TPJC keeper Avani Jain (#11). TPJC also had a tight defence that prevented MJC from cutting in.

With five minutes left on the clock, Janessa Kong (MJC #14) unleashed a drag shot from the corner to score the second goal for MJC. This was followed by a one-two play that ended with Olivia Thomson (MJC #77) scoring yet another goal in under a minute.

MJC continued to pull ahead in the second period and controlled most of the game. Emily Ong (#88) scored the first goal of the period to extend the lead to 4-0 for MJC. Soon after, Alfie Kwa (MJC #36) doubled her tally from a free hit to bag another goal.

With their fast team plays and passes, MJC manoeuvred through the TPJC defence and fired a host of shots. However, they fell short and many shots rebounded off the post instead.

Towards the end of the second period, Nichole Khoo (MJC #24) scored the sixth goal for MJC.

The third period was a close one and both teams were unable to score. TPJC upped their defence and pressured MJC to prevent them from taking shots. The few shots that MJC took went wide due to pressure from TPJC.

Since they had a six-goal lead, MJC slowed the pace of the game in the third period and were less aggressive in offense. However, TPJC were still unable to score despite bringing the ball into the attacking half. The third period remained scoreless and MJC ended with a 6-0 win.

Alfie Kwa (#36), captain of MJC, said, “It wasn’t our best game at all but we will put in more effort. I guess our team needs to improve on speed and stamina and just put in more passion. We hope to win the championship title.”
