Singapore National Stadium, Friday, April 29, 2016 — Addeen Idzni Binte Imran of Singapore Sports School clocked a timing of 2 minutes 31.28 seconds in the B Division Girls 800m to win the gold at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships.

She clocked the fastest timing across the A, B, and C Divisions. A Division 800m champion Alexandra Louise Wee of Victoria Junior College clocked 2:36.53, while C Division champion Wu Shu Han of Nanyang Girls’ High ran a 2:35.04.

However, the electronically-timed record still stands at 2:20.02, set by Singapore Sports School alumna Chua Khai Leng in 2006.

Arissa Rashid of Nanyang Girls’ High was second in 2:31.89 while Levyn Wong of Dunman High School was third in 2:31.90.

Joie Teo of Cedar Girls’ Secondary took the early lead, establishing a sizeable gap between herself and the rest of the runners who remained as a pack.

The pack, led by Arissa Rashid of Nanyang Girls’ High, managed to catch up with Joie at the 300m mark.

Arissa was in the lead at the beginning of the second round, the whole pack following closely behind her. However, at the 500m mark, Levyn Wong of Dunman High School took the initiative to break away from the pack with a quick surge, followed closely by Cheryl Chng of Cedar Girls’.

With 200m of the race left, the pack started to spread out as Addeen stepped up from behind to take the lead. In response, Arissa picked up the pace to execute her finishing kick with 150m to go.

Addeen responded quickly to Arissa’s change in pace and the two fought neck and neck over the last 100m, with Addeen outsprinting Arissa by just 0.61 seconds.

“I’m really happy and relieved to have won my individual race, especially since I couldn’t participate in last year’s nationals due to a sprained ankle,” said Addeen. “My competitors all played a part in helping me push myself and to work harder, especially in the final straight.”

“I would like to thank my coach, teachers, friends and family for their continuous support and for believing in me. Special mention goes out to Arissa Rashid from Nanyang Girls’ High who fought hard and bravely after her 1500m and also for being such a good friend on and off the track.”
