Hougang Sports Hall, Friday, April 22, 2016 – Raffles Institution (RI) made a comeback in the last period to beat Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 6-2 in Round 1 of the National A Division Girls Floorball Championship.

The win was a first for Raffles, after they had lost to Catholic Junior College and played out a draw with National Junior College (NJC). For HCI, the loss drops them to a 1-2 win-loss record.

Rachel Park (RI #13) led her team to victory with a game high of three goals while Lim Shing (HCI #20) was responsible for the two HCI goals.

Hwa Chong started the game with an impressive defence and had most of the ball possession. Raffles had trouble getting the ball to their attacking half and had few opportunities to score.

However, they soon found their chance when they had a free-hit from the corner. In a quick pass and shoot, Rachel Park (RI #13) scored the first goal from a tight angle.

Hwa Chong had a few shots on target but their shots were all saved by Raffles keeper, Tan Wee Ning (RI #81). The first period ended 1-0 to Raffles.

In the second period, Raffles scored yet again as Rachel Park (#13) sent a ball under the keeper’s legs. Despite trailing by two goals, Hwa Chong didn’t give up and came back with a Lim Shing (#20) goal.

Hwa Chong were aggressive in offence, with good ball control and swift passing. Both teams matched each other until Lim Shing (HCI #20) dribbled past the Raffles defence, worked her way towards the goal and scored against the keeper to make it 2-2.

Raffles raced into the third period and scored a goal within the minute of the restart. They quickly extended their lead with two goals by Annabelle Chow (#18) and one by Lam Hsin Hui (#11) to establish a four-point, 6-2 lead.

Hwa Chong made a valiant effort to reduce the deficit and, led by Lim Shing (#20), had a few opportunities to score. However, their shots were either blocked by defenders or saved by the keeper.

Rachel Park (#13), captain of RI, said, “This was definitely one of our most emotional games. We went in with the same mindset of no expectations and high confidence, with strong faith and belief. I personally think that the team showed great tenacity and strength as we ended the second period with a nerve-wracking draw but managed to rise up to the challenge in the end.”

She added, “The win was unexpected. But it serves as a good motivation for all of us to only keep working harder and not be complacent.”

Raffles is aiming to make it to the semi-final and next face River Valley High School. Hwa Chong will go up against NJC. Both games will be played on Wednesday, April 27.
