OCBC Aquatic Centre, Thursday, April 7, 2016 —Defending champions Raffles Institution (RI) beat Saint Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) 19-2 to take home their eighth straight National A Division Water Polo Championship title.

Brenda Lim (RI #2) was the top scorer of the game with nine goals, while Roshini (SAJC #2) scored both goals for SAJC.

SAJC played an aggressive defense from the start which helped them to intercept quite a few of RI’s passes. However, RI were quick to adjust and were also adept in intercepting SAJC passes.

RI played long passes to counter SAJC, and coupled with their shooting accuracy, they built a 5-0 lead.

RI made it difficult for SAJC to find an opening to score. While SAJC tired to shoot quite a few times, RI blocked many of their attempts.

SAJC efforts finally saw them earn a penalty and Roshini (SAJC #2) scored their opening goal. By the end of the first quarter, RI had a commanding 8-1.

In the second quarter, SAJC saw their attempts hit the posts or saved by RI goalkeeper, Samantha Ang (#1). In the meantime, RI poured in another five goals to build a 13-1 lead at halftime.

Both teams cancelled each other out for the first five minutes of the third quarter as the score remained unchanged.

RI eventually changed up their tactics and got through to score two goals. A momentary lapse in the RI defense saw Roshini (SAJC #2) score with 10 seconds left to the quarter for a 15-2 lead.

Another four RI goals in the final period sealed the 20-2 win and championship title.

RI captain, Abielle Yeo (#7) said, “Today’s game is definitely an improvement from our preliminaries round game against Saints. They play a different tactic from what we were used to but through training we learnt to adapt to their new tactic. I am very happy and very proud of team because we worked really hard to get to where we are today.”
