Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, March 21, 2016 — Sherman Seet (ACSBR #11) scored 20 straight points on his way to an impressive 30-point display, as South Zone Champions Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) took down Woodgrove Secondary 52-32 to grab their opening win in the National B Division Basketball Championship.

Owen Liow (#11) finished with a team-high 10 points for Woodgrove. Owen’s brother, Andy (#14), also added nine points for the team which finished fourth in the North Zone.

Despite the relatively straightforward victory, Dinesh Rajandhran (ACSBR #2) felt that his team could have played at a higher level. “We didn’t play our usual game today. We made many mistakes and didn’t communicate well. We were too reliant on Sherman, who stepped up when the rest were not performing,” he said.

“We were also not at full strength as we had many injuries in the team and played the game with only 10 men. I’m glad that we still managed to win convincingly despite our lacklustre performance,” he added.

The 1st quarter started out a close affair, with Woodgrove racing into a 9-5 lead midway through the period. Yet, their lead barely lasted as ACS Barker closed the quarter out with a 6-0 run in the final 4 minutes 30 seconds to lead 11-9 after one.

Both teams failed to put points on the board in the 2nd quarter until Dinesh (ACSBR #2) stopped the rot with a 3-pointer to beat the shot clock with 7:35 left. A couple of three point plays by the Liow siblings kept Woodgrove in the game, as ACS Barker only held a nine-point, 27-18 lead at the half.

Sherman (ACSBR #11) then single-handedly extinguished any hopes of a Woodgrove comeback.

The guard poured in 14 straight points for his team to start the 3rd quarter as ACS Barker built an unassailable 20-point lead heading into the 4th. Having been responsible for the final six points for his team in the 2nd quarter, Sherman scored a sensational 20 straight for his team in what turned out to be a classic individual performance.

The South Zone champs comfortably saw out the game in the final quarter as they begin their quest for a first national title with a 52-32 victory.

Assumption English School defeated Bedok Green Secondary 54-46 in Group C’s other opening day match-up.

ACS Barker next face Assumption English, while Woodgrove play Bedok Green as both teams look to avoid an early exit from the Championship having lost their opening games. Both matches will be played at Clementi Sports Hall and tip-off is at 1.45pm on Thursday, March 24.
