PESEB, Thursday, March 3, 2016 — Saint Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) beat Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 10-2 in their opening game of the National A Division Water Polo Championship.

Roshini (SAJC #2) was the top scorer of the game with six goals.

A strong SAJC constantly made it difficult for HCI to get a shot off before the 30-second shot clock went off, forcing many turnovers.

However, SAJC was unable to capitalize on these turnovers with careless passes which HCI were able to intercept. SAJC led by a slim 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.

SAJC had a better second quarter, scoring three while holding HCI scoreless. They continued with their aggressive defense to deny HCI hardly any chances to get their shots off before the shot clock wound down.

SAJC ended the first half with a 5-1 lead.

The second half saw HCI holding SAJC to just one goal. HCI used long passes to get behind the SAJC defense but the SAJC goalkeeper thwarted their attempts.

The final quarter was SAJC’s best quarter with four goals as they found and exploited loopholes in the HCI defense.

An SAJC miscommunication left their defense wide open which HCI took advantage of to score their second goal. But HCI would not get another look as SAJC locked down on defence to seal the 10-2 win.

SAJC captain, Naomi(#6), said, “My team played really well and I am very proud of them because most of them did not start out as swimmers but they trained really hard and did their best today.”
