Delta Sports Hall, Monday, February 29, 2016 — National Junior College (NJC) strolled past Mayflower Secondary 52-12 to earn their second consecutive trip to the final of the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Vanessa (NJC #7) dropped 11 points to lead all scorers while Julie (Mayflower #11) scored a team-high six points in the contest.
NJC’s aggressive full court man-to-man defense was the catalyst to a blistering 1st quarter display, as they scored 24 unanswered points to put the result beyond any doubt after only 10 minutes played.
Credits to the Mayflower team as they continued battling and denied NJC from outscoring them significantly from then on. The 2nd quarter was a closer affair with NJC edging the quarter 8-4 and the team in white built a 32-4 lead heading into the half-time break.
The 2nd half was more of the same. Despite a relentless effort by Mayflower, NJC managed to steadily increase their lead with efficiency on the offensive end. NJC kept their players fresh by rotating all five players at once and this move paid dividends as 10 players from the NJC team were on the scoresheet.
NJC comfortably saw out the game and claimed a 52-12 victory, earning another shot at the South Zone title which they narrowly conceded to CHIJ (Toa Payoh) last year.
NJC will face Zhonghua Secondary in the Championship decider after Zhonghua edged out defending champions CHIJ (Toa Payoh) in a semi-final thriller. The final will be played at 1pm on Thursday, March 4, at Delta Sports Hall.
