Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, February 17, 2016 — After exchanging leads throughout the game, Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) narrowly beat North Vista Secondary (NV) 28-25 in the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

SCGS finish Round 2 with a 3-0 win-loss record and first place in their group. They qualify for the semi-finals and take one step closer to their goal of reaching the semis in the National Championship.

Patricia (SCGS #7) scored a game high of 11 points while Lydia (NV #7) led her team with 8 points.

From the 1st quarter, both teams were evenly matched in their attack and defense as they aggressively tried to drive in and catch defensive rebounds. Both teams matched each other point for point throughout the entire quarter.

With 30 seconds left and the score tied at 9-9, a lay-up by Lydia (NV #7) gave North Vista an 11-9 lead over SCGS at the end of the first quarter.

The 2nd quarter saw North Vista becoming more aggressive in their defense which made it difficult for SCGS to score their lay-ups and their offensive putbacks. While North Vista were able to catch quite a few defensive rebounds and intercept SCGS’ passes, they were unable to score on their fast breaks.

A foul committed on Aisling (SCGS #9) allowed her to sink two free throws to tie the score at 11-11. In the last few minutes of the 2nd quarter, SCGS’ continued attempts to drive in made North Vista a little careless in their defense.

SCGS took advantage of North Vista’s porous defense to get clear looks at the basket and managed to score two baskets to take back the lead. The 2nd quarter ended with SCGS leading 15-11.

The 3rd quarter saw North Vista switching to a full court press to pressure SCGS into making mistakes. North Vista were able to intercept SCGS’ careless passes and score their fast breaks.

SCGS’ tight zone defense forced North Vista into long-range shots near the 3-point line, which were successful.

With 3 minutes left to the quarter, North Vista evened out the score at 17-17. Their aggressive attack and quick passes ensured that their fast breaks were successful. North Vista took back the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter at 23-20.

The 4th quarter saw both teams becoming much more aggressive in both their attacks and defenses. A 3-pointer by Patricia (SCGS #7) tied the score at 23-23. The game reached a stalemate for a while as both teams’ tight defense prevented each other from scoring.

With 2 minutes left in the game, both teams were tied 25-25. A lay-up plus the foul by Patricia (SCGS #7) gave her a free throw, which she converted and SCGS led 28-25 with 40 seconds left in the game.

Despite North Vista’s aggressive attack, SCGS were able to hold on and win the game.

SCGS captain, Rachel Yeo (#13), said, “My teammates gave a good fight and so did North Vista. It was a good game and we fought all the way to the end and never gave up.”
