Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, February 17, 2016 — A fourth quarter surge from Christ Church Secondary condemned Yishun Secondary to a 67-33 defeat in the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Christ Church bounced back from their loss in the previous game with a stunning performance. They started the game strongly and ended the game with a spectacular 23 points rampage in the last quarter.
Valentia Wong (#7) was the key player for Christ Church in the game. She clinched 24 points and ended the game as top scorer. Yishun was led by Tay Wen Ying (#12) with 13 points.
The game tilted heavily in Christ Church’s favour right from the beginning. Their early dominance saw them go up 13-0 within the first four minutes. Yishun only managed to score their first point mid-way through the first quarter, through a free throw.
Yishun proceeded to enjoy a good spell, closing the gap on Christ Church to six points.
Early in the second quarter, Vivien (Yishun #7) showed great agility. The light-footed player dropped her shoulder to break past her marker for a lay-up.
The pace of the game then began to tail off, with no urgency from either team.
Both coaches were very vocal on the sidelines and this helped drove the pace of the game up, as both team started attempting more dribbles and shots than before.
Christ Church edged the third quarter narrowly, with Valentia (#7) orchestrating play expertly. The talented playmaker scored baskets and created chances for her teammates to latch onto. She was also the only player who scored a 3-pointer in the game.
Gina Tee (#11) of Yishun showed great resolve, putting in an energetic display for her team. Her work rate was second to none and helped kept Yishun in the fight.
Christ Church kicked into high gear in the last quarter, delivering final blows to a fatigued Yishun side. Gladys Ng (#8) contributed eight points for Christ Church in the quarter alone.
Towards the closing stages of the game, Yishun found themselves extremely lethargic and resorted to defending in numbers so as to suppress Christ Church’s scoring spree. A 23-3 quarter saw Christ Church run away with a well-earned triumph.
Captain of Christ Church, Jie Xin (#6) remarked, “We did well in getting the rebounds, but the game could have been better. We have to improve on our defense for the upcoming games. Our target is to be the North Zone champions.”
