OCBC Arena, Monday, February 16, 2016 — Fairfield Methodist School (FMS) dominated on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court to emerge with a 77-22 victory over Peicai Secondary (PCS) to improve to a 2-0 win-loss record in the 2nd round of the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Denzel Tan (#5) and Richard Lim (#11) both scored 14 points apiece to lead Fairfield in the scoring column, with the two players combining for five 3-pointers. Teammate Ho Kang Jie (#9) chipped in 12 points.

Nicholas Lim (#7) and Wee Zhi Zhong (#12) both scored a team-high 8 points for Peicai, whose record now stands at 0-2 in the 2nd round. With this loss, Peicai fall out of contention for a semi-final spot.

Both teams came into the opening period playing at a fast pace as they executed their run and gun offense. While Peicai struggled with their shooting and turnovers, Fairfield were on fire from distance in the quarter as the whole team combined for six 3-pointers in the first quarter alone.

Fairfield’s tight defense further deprived Peicai of good looks at the basket. Fairfield went on a huge 17-2 run in the last 5 mintues of the opening period to lead 34-9.

Peicai drew first blood in the second quarter on an underbasket shot by Wee Zhi Zhong (#12), as they attacked the paint aggressively for points in the paint. However, Peicai gave up turnovers as they struggled to find answers against Fairfield’s full court zone press.

Fairfield took advantage of those turnovers to score easy fast break points, and continued to pull away. At halftime, Fairfield led by 35 points.

It was more of the same in the third quarter, as Fairfield contiinued to pull away from Peicai. On a particular play at the 6 minute mark, Justin Lum (Fairfield #7) busted out a sweet crossover that froze his defender as he drove to the hoop for a layup.

Despite the overwhelming odds aginst them, Peicai fought back as they upped their intensity on defense to make life as difficult as possible for Fairfield’s offense.

On offense, Peicai continued to aggressively attack the paint. On Peicai’s last offensive possession in the quarter, Nicholas Lim (PCS #7) split three defenders as he made a strong drive to the hoop for a layup. At the end of the third period, Peicai trailed Fairfield with 21-65.

In the closing period, Fairfield put up a dominant defensive display as they held Peicai scoreless for the first 4:30. Peicai only managed to score after Tan Chao Khon (#6) drew a foul and converted a free throw. In the whole fourth quarter, Fairfield’s stingy defense held Peicai to only one point.
