Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, February 10, 2016 – Behind five 3-pointers by Zhan Leong (HY #9), Hua Yi Secondary took down Nan Hua High (NH) 50-35 and ended Nan Hua’s hopes of qualifying for the 2nd round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Following a 14-point defeat to Assumption English earlier in the Championship, Nan Hua needed victories in their final two matches against Hua Yi and Pioneer Secondary to have any chance of qualifying.

Unfortunately for Nan Hua, Hua Yi were scorching hot from the field.

Hua Yi made six 3-pointers while Nan Hua connected on only a single 3-point field goal attempt. Zhan Leong (Hua Yi #9) finished with a game-high 15 points, scoring all of his points from beyond the arc. Lenson Lim (NH #5) had a team-high nine points in the game.

With regards to the game, Tan Peng Yu (Nan Hua #7) said, “I think that the turning point of the game was in the third quarter when our defence became lax. We also missed many of the open shots and failed to grab many rebounds, causing us to give up easy buckets on the break.”

He added, “I feel that we could have played our offensive game much better with more ball movement and made the open shots that were presented to us. If we had upped our offensive game and improved our rebounding, I believe that we would have been able to match-up against our opponents in this match.”

Hua Yi led for 39 minutes in a game which was closer than the score line suggested. Hua Yi only led by single digits for large parts of the game, before pulling away late in the 4th quarter.

A 12-1 surge late in the 4th quarter allowed Hua Yi to eventually claim a comfortable 15-point victory in both teams’ penultimate match of the season.

Zhan Leong (HY #9) commented post-game, “Our defense was not good enough. We need to communicate more, shut our opponents out of the zone more often and improve on rebounding. We have big guys but were unable to box out our opponents.”

Both teams currently hold a 1-2 record. Nan Hua and Hua Yi will face Pioneer and Westwood respectively in their final game of the season on February 17.
