Republic Polytechnic, Wednesday, February 3, 2016 — Evergreen Secondary beat Woodlands Secondary 33-19 in the North Zone B Division Netball Championship preliminary round to improve to a 2-1 win-loss record.

They had earlier beaten Naval Base Secondary 27-15 but lost to CHIJ St Joseph’s Convent 15-34.

For Woodlands, this was their third loss in the competition, after losing to Punggol Secondary 19-32 and CHIJ St Joseph’s Convent 9–81, making it almost improbable for them to qualify for Round 2. Their consolation so far was a 24-19 win over Naval Base Secondary.

Overall, the game was in fact a tight and cagey affair as Evergreen edged out Woodlands by only two points in each of the first three quarters. Possession was evenly contested and both teams had good communication among their players, with shouts consistently being heard throughout the whole match.

The game was poised at 23–17 going into the last quarter.

In the last quarter, however, Evergreen started to pull away thanks to better efficiency in the attacking semi-circle. At the centre of it all was Goal Shooter (GS) Yu Xian, who converted 23 of her 35 shots in the entire game.

A good point to take away from Woodland’s performance was their never-say-die spirit as they never looked like throwing in the towel for much of the game, matching Evergreen’s possession and work-rate with brave interceptions of the ball.

Woodlands’ Goal Attack (GA) Soo Min also had an assured performance, scoring most of her team’s points by converting 12 of her 14 attempts, some by a good distance from the net.

Evergreen will look to build on this win against Fuchun Secondary on Wednesday, February 17, while Woodlands will next meet Serangoon Secondary on Friday, February 19. Both matches will be played at Republic Polytechnic again.
