OCBC Arena, Wednesday, February 3, 2016 — Guangyang Secondary turned on the style against Bishan Park Secondary, recording an 86-18 win to advance to the 2nd round of the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship as runners-up of Group A.

Mathematically, Bishan Park were not out of the running before tip-off.

Guangyang concluded the preliminary round with a 3-1 win loss record while Bishan Park finished their season 1-3 to finish fourth in Group A. Mayflower ended their season at 2-2.

An unlikely 79-point victory for Bishan Park would have seen them qualify from the group courtesy of a superior head-to-head record between themselves, Guangyang and Mayflower. Interestingly, a Bishan Park victory by a smaller margin would have gifted Mayflower a place in the 2nd round based on the three team’s head-to-head record.

Guangyang, however, had their destiny in their own hands and were determined to make the most of it.

In a game which Bishan Park found it tough to match up to their opponents, Guangyang dominated the offensive boards and forced Bishan Park into legion of turnovers. Guangyang’s guard had several steals which turned into easy lay-ups at the other end in the opening quarter, helping the team in blue build a comfortable 18-5 lead after one.

With Fairfield Methodist firmly in control against St. Andrew’s on the adjacent court, all Guangyang needed was a victory to prevent complications to their qualification hopes. They knew that qualification was firmly in the bag when they held a 38-10 half time lead.

Whenever a team gets comfortable, they usually go on a roll.

Guangyang played out the remainder of the game without any burden on their shoulders and scored a staggering 34 points in the 4th quarter, including two three-pointers in the final minute of the game.

The 68-point victory was Guangyang’s largest of the season so far and there could not have been a better way to celebrate qualification.

The 1st round of the Championship has now officially concluded. The 2nd round commences on February 12, after the Chinese New Year break.
