OCBC Arena, Friday, January 22, 2016 — Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) put up an impressive 1st quarter display to defeat group rivals Raffles Institution (RI) 69-43 and finish top of Group B in the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

ACS Barker were led by Lavin Raj (#10), who recorded a huge double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Bryan Teo (RI #12) bagged a team-high 16 points in the loss.

Dinesh Rajandhran (ACSBR #2) got his team’s offense rolling early by sinking a three-pointer on his first attempt. He finished with 13 points and had two made threes. Lavin (ACSBR #10) then joined in the party, grabbing three consecutive offensive boards to score easy baskets and forced a timeout by RI after only 1:33 played.

The timeout proved ineffective as ACS Barker used a 15-0 run either side of the timeout to build an 18-point, first-quarter lead. RI made a few shots late in the first quarter but still trailed by 15 points heading into the 2nd.

Lavin continued to dominate the offensive boards in the 2nd quarter, allowing him to record a double-double by halftime. ACS Barker were in the penalty with 5:10 still to go in the 2nd, but RI’s poor conversion rate from the free-throw line meant that they could not close the gap. RI went just 2 of 9 from the charity stripe in that quarter. ACS Barker were in the driving seat and led by 23 points at halftime.

RI refused to back down though, as they matched ACS Barker point for point in the 3rd quarter.

The 2nd half was filled with end-to-end action as ACS Barker maintained their high-pace offense while RI countered with a series of fast break lay-ups. Reuben Yang (RI #14) was particularly impressive in the 2nd half as he made three three-pointers to finish with nine points in the game.

ACS Barker would eventually grab a 26-point victory, handing RI its first defeat of the season and pushing them into the runners-up spot in Group B.

With regard to his team’s performance, Dinesh (ACSBR #2) said, “The team played hard but we were nowhere near our full potential. Defensively, we played a bad game but our team spirit is very high and that helped get the job done.”
