Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, January 20, 2016 — Christ Church Secondary (CHR) surprised onlookers when they defeated powerhouse Presbyterian High School (PHS) 53-45 in Round 1 of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Javiel Chew (#30) from Presbyterian High had a game-high of 17 points while Chalmer Chin (#15) led Christ Church with 11.

Presbyterian High started strong and with Christ Church missing many shot attempts, the first quarter ended with Presbyterian High leading comfortably by 20-8.

Christ Church turned the tables in the second quarter, relying on steals and fast breaks as their opponents made mistakes to gain multiple baskets. Towards the end of the quarter, Ernest Kwek Jun (CHR #8) sank a jump shot to tie it up 22-22. However, Presbyterian High replied with a shot of their own to keep a slender lead of 24-22 heading into the half time break.

PHS started the third quarter with a full court press to pressure Christ Church into making mistakes. However, Christ Church were unfazed and led by Chalmer Chin (#15), they took back the lead.

Christ Church led 27-26 but a 3-pointer by Javiel Chew (PHS #30) gave Presbyterian High the lead yet again. From then, Presbyterian High gained momentum and intercepted passes to score to end the third quarter leading by six points at 37-31.

Christ Church started the last quarter with a 3-point shot by Aw Kai Jun (#9) but Presbyterian High replied with a 3-pointer of their own. Christ Church quickly scored a few baskets to trail just by one point at 39-40. Presbyterian High were then only able to watch as Eugene Torrato (#4) drove in to score and gain the lead for Christ Church. This was followed by yet another 3-pointer from Eugene (#4) to extend Christ Church’s lead. Christ Church continued to keep their lead to finally win 53-45.

Christ Church captain, Ernest Kwek (#8), said, “The game was fun and exciting. The team played well today. Because they (PHS) are a very good school, if we can win then we are satisfied with it.”

Christ Church are aiming for top four in the zone and a top-eight finish in the National Championship. They next face Woodlands Secondary while Presbyterian High will go up against Marsiling Secondary.
