Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, January 20, 2016 — Canberra Secondary kept the lead throughout to beat Deyi Secondary 55-51 in a close match in the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Canberra’s Dion (#35) led his team with 22 points while Yip Jun Yan (#7) from Deyi had a game-high of 23 points.
The game had a close start with the teams equally matched, but Canberra’s fast breaks gave them a slight advantage to end the first quarter leading 9-6.
Deyi were undeterred by the score and managed to narrow the gap quickly within the first half of the second quarter. A free throw by Deyi’s Tang Xiu Jun (#11) helped tie the game 13-13. However, Canberra retaliated with a 3-pointer by Dion (#35) to extend their lead.
Canberra continued to keep their lead and made easy work of Deyi’s defence. They extended their lead to 12 points before Deyi’s Jun Yan (#7) made a comeback with a 3-point shot. The third quarter ended with Canberra ahead by six point at 40-34.
The last quarter was where Canberra started to lose out due to poor stamina as Deyi made shot after shot to catch up. Deyi narrowed the deficit to three points with only 20 seconds left but Canberra held on to win 54-51.
Canberra captain Dion (#35) said, “We need to work on our defence. We also need to work on our shots. Our shots were quite off. The game was not so easy because we lack stamina. But we played better today and had more good plays.”
Canberra are aiming for the top four in the North Zone. Canberra next face Catholic High School while Deyi will go up against Pei Hwa Secondary.
