OCBC Arena, Friday, January 15, 2016 — Zhonghua Secondary (ZHS) defeated Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) 28-26 in their first game of the season in the South Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.
Han Xi (#9) from RGS led all scorers with 11 points while Zhonghua’s Reanne Ching (#7) had a team-high of 10.
The match had a close start as both teams were equally matched in defence and attack. The first quarter ended with a 3-pointer by Han Xi (#9) to give RGS a slight 7-6 lead.
Zhonghua were not fazed by this and came back in full force during the second quarter. They equalised quickly and continued to pressure RGS with their sharp shooting. The lead went back and forth as both teams traded baskets. Reanne Ching (#7) from Zhonghua then scored a free throw to end the quarter with the scored tied at 12-12.
RGS secured the lead at the start of the third quarter but did not manage to maintain it as Zhonghua retaliated with steals and rebounds. Zhonghua then made continuous baskets to extend their lead to six points (26-20).
The final quarter was an intense one as both teams pulled out all stops and were neck and neck. RGS managed to narrow the deficit to two points (26-28) with only 15 seconds left on the clock.
RGS took possession of the ball in the last few seconds but Zhonghua remained focused and defended their lead to win 28-26.
Zhonghua’s vice-captain, Reanne Ching (#7), said, “Due to injuries, morale was quite low but we picked up towards the end.”
Zhonghua’s captain, Esther Yip (#4), added, “The team played quite well today.”
Zhonghua next face Bukit Merah Secondary while RGS will play National Junior College.
