OCBC Arena, Friday, January 15, 2016 — St. Margaret’s Secondary School opened their season with a comfortable 35-15 win over Kent Ridge Secondary School in the South Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

Xiao Chengxin (#11) of St. Margaret’s had a game-high 17 points while Celest (#11) led Kent Ridge with six.

St. Margaret’s led from start to finish, scoring steadily throughout the first quarter and overpowering Kent Ridge’s defense. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 13-0, with Xiao Chengxin (#11) scoring seven of the 13 points obtained.

Although Celest (#11) of Kent Ridge was able to catch many of the rebounds from St. Margaret’s botched shots, St. Margaret’s ultimately dominated by regaining possession of the ball.

At the start of the 2nd quarter, Kent Ridge quickly gained possession of the ball, scoring two points within the first 30 seconds. Kent Ridge also upped their defence after the short break, making it more difficult for St. Margaret’s to score, as they outscored them 7-5.

St. Margaret’s led 18-7 at half-time.

The 2nd half of the game proved to be more intense than the first, with coaches from both teams barking orders at their respective players. St. Margaret’s were on a roll and scored 10 points in under a minute.

Kent Ridge, on the other hand, fought hard, with Dylynn (#23) racing to score a basket before time was up for the 3rd quarter. Unfortunately, although her shot went into the basket, time had run out.

In the final quarter, both teams initially seemed to lose focus but quickly recovered, with with St. Margaret’s winning the quarter 7-4 to wrap up the 35-15 win.

“I think we did quite well for our first game,” said Xiao Chengxin (#11), captain of St. Margaret’s.

“I think we were a bit nervous because it was our first game this season,” said vice-captain Linette Lum (#8).

“We did better at the later part of the game though!” added Chengxin.

Despite a good start to their season, Chengxin remained humble and believed that the team had areas to improve on, specifically their stamina and their teamwork.

St. Margaret’s will next be up against Mayflower Secondary while Kent Ridge will play against CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) on Monday, Jan 25.
