Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, January 13, 2016 — North Vista Secondary (NV) pulled off an impressive 71-24 victory over Woodlands Ring Secondary (WRS) in their opening game of the 2016 North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Nicholas Tay (NV #6) scored a game-high 16 points, while Koh Swee Yang (#14) had eight points to lead Woodlands Ring.

From the opening tip, North Vista’s dominance was telling. North Vista attempted a flurry of 3-pointers from the off to breakdown Woodlands Ring’s zone defence. North Vista had two made 3s in the 1st quarter to put the score at 18-4 after the first 10 minutes.

In the 2nd quarter, NV’s full court set proved effective as WRS found it tough to break down the NV defence. This led to many steals on the defensive end for NV, which turned to easy fast break lay-ups at the other end. NV ended the quarter on a 15-0 run to build an unassailable 35-5 lead. with Nicholas Tay (NV #6) alone responsible for nine of those 15 points in that run.

After the break, NV continues its run with nine unanswered points. Koh Wei Lun (WRS #4) then made a 3-pointer to end WRS’ barren run, making it 44-8. Despite being down, WRS continued to hustle on every play and were rewarded with a number of made baskets towards the end of the 3rd quarter, pushing the score to 58-14 at the end of the 3rd.

Led by captain Koh Swee Yang (WRS #14), WRS continued to play hard and drew several fouls with some aggressive plays to start the 4th. Swee Yang took responsibility on the offensive end by scoring seven straight points for his team in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Both teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the game as NV eventually secured a 71-24 victory.

After the game, Koh Swee Yang (WRS #14) said, “North Vista was very strong, but we never gave up and kept fighting.”

Swee Yang also targeted a top-four finish for his team.

With regard to the game, Sim Xuan (NV #2) said, “Our defensive rebounding is good but there is much to improve on offensive rebounding and offense in general.”

North Vista will next play Northland Secondary while Woodlands Ring will take on North View Secondary. Both games are on Monday at the Singapore Basketball Centre.
