OCBC Arena, Tuesday, December 8, 2015 — Singapore’s Lawrence Tay came away with a spectacular medal haul of one gold, one silver and three bronzes at the 8th ASEAN Para Games. He also set a new Games Record of 34.52 seconds in the Men’s S14 50m backstroke, shattering the previous record of 36.1 seconds by more than a second.

Tay’s silver came from the SM14 200m Individual Medley (IM), a mere 40 minutes before his winning swim in the 50m backstroke. After completing the 200m IM in 2:45.29 minutes, Tay immediately went straight to the 50m backstroke in which he dominated and smashed the Games Record.

On that feat, Tay said: “I’m pretty happy with my results. I didn’t have proper warm down after the IM so I had cramps and suffered an asthma attack after both events. I had back-to-back events so I was very tired.” Tay had to cope with nine events in four days, especially one day that had four races.

“i just went all out for my last event,” added the 21-year-old when asked about how he managed to push through the fatigue.

Tay also bagged the bronze medals in the SB14 50m breaststroke, S14 100m backstroke and SB14 100m breaststroke, clocking 36.26s, 1:17.14 minutes and 1:20.38 minutes respectively.

“The Games Record for the 50m backstroke was a surprise to me. I was shocked,” said Tay on his results. “I’m happy and excited. This is my present for Singapore’s 50th birthday and it will serve as motivation for my other upcoming races.”
