National Stadium, Monday, December 7, 2015 — In the Men’s F20 Shot Put final at the 8th ASEAN Para Games, Singapore’s Danial Rusydi and Ivan Chua smashed their Personal Bests (PB) with efforts of 8.66m and 8.04m to finish fourth and fifth respectively.

Separating themselves early from the field were Malaysia’s Muhammad Ziyad Bin Zolkefli and Mohamad Aliff Bin Mohamad Awi who eventually came in first and second with 15.51m and 11.10m respectively. Bronze went to Brunei’s Mohammad Khairin Azhar Bin Rosli who registered 10.57m.

Singapore’s Rusydi stumbled at the start, making foul throws in his first two attempts. However, he quickly regained composure and managed to secure 8.66m in his fourth throw.

“The event went well but there were a few mistakes that I made. For the fourth or fifth one, I felt that I was going to throw just over nine metres. But the ball slipped my hand while I was going into reverse,” said 18-year-old Rusydi, who is a debutant in this year’s Games.

Rusydi is currently nursing an injury. “My power dropped because of my meniscus tear. I’m going to go for surgery after this and hopefully training will be back to normal,” he explained.

Compatriot Chua was steadier, posting 8.04m midway through. However, he shares the same sentiment as Rusydi. “I made a lot of mistakes today,” he said. “I was too nervous as it was my first time. I also don’t normally do throwing; I’m usually running the 100m and 200m. But because I qualified for the ASEAN Para Games for the shot put, they put me in this event.”

On how it feels to represent the nation on home ground, Rusydi said, “We feel proud because it’s held in our country. But we get a bit too overexcited sometimes and that makes us lose our concentration.”

Both athletes are now looking forward to the next ASEAN Para Games that will be held in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia in 2017.

The Games Record for the Men’s F20 Shot Put stands at 15.69m, set by gold medalist Ziyad in 2014.
