Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, August 18, 2015 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) edged out North Vista Secondary for the 30–29 win to record their first win in the second round of the National C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

“The fighting spirit of the team was really great,” said Patricia Orenza (#7).

“When we were lacking behind in the second half, the team did not give up and managed to give their best and that is a mentality that we have to have as a team.

“We can’t just have only one person with the fighting spirit. It has to be the entire team bringing up the score to help us win the game,” added the SCGS captain, who finished with a team-high 12 points.

It was a tight affair in the first half, but SCGS managed to hold their lead through Patricia Orenza (#7), who had two treys, including a buzzer beater from half court.

After the break, however, things turned to the favour of North Vista. Lydia (#8) was unstoppable with her drives, finishing with a game-high 17 points. She single-handedly outscored the entire SCGS team in the third quarter with her nine points, to help North Vista take a two-point lead.

SCGS regrouped and tied the game with a layup from Margaret Suriya (#11), and thereafter, both teams went back-and-forth.

With just a little over a minute to play, Dylen Serrano (#13) knocked down two shots from the charity stripe to give SCGS a one-point edge.

North Vista had several chances to turn the tide, but collapsed due to an offensive breakdown in the dying moments. They botched several passes up court, which eventually allowed SCGS to hold possession and whittle the clock down for the victory.

“Overall, our game wasn’t up to expectation, and I feel that we weren’t really focusing,” said SCGS vice-captain Nadia Ghani (#9).

“Fortunately, we managed to cool down in the final quarter and strive for every ball.”
