Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, August 14, 2015 — With the help of Shaun Ong (#13), Jurong Secondary put a full-stop to Chung Cheng High (Main)’s National C Division Basketball Championship run, as they clinched a 57–43 win on the final day of the preliminary round.
Ong (#13) was unstopabble as he poured in a game-high 32 points to lead Jurong to their third straight win.
Unfortunately for Chung Cheng, the defeat is their second, including a 28–58 loss to North Vista Secondary, who will advance to the second round alongside Jurong.
Chung Cheng had no reason to be disappointed as they enjoyed sterling play from Eldrin Tor (#12).
The Secondary 1 point guard dazzled the court with his handles and playmaking, and alongside swingman Antonio Soo (#9), they kept the scores close throughout the game.
With just five minutes remaining, both Tor (#12) and Soo (#9) sparked Chung Cheng to a 9–0 run and reduced the deficit to a single point.
However, Jurong had an answer in Ong (#13).
The Jurong forward scored 11 of his team’s 13 final points in the frame to put the game out of reach for Chung Cheng.
“It has been a very good opportunity for us to be playing here, because for some of us, it is our first year here,” said Ong (#13).
“After a disappointing West Zone finish, we picked ourselves up and improved ourselves in training, and fortunately, won all our first round games here at the Nationals.”
On facing stronger opponents in the second round, Ong (#13) added, “Of course, the opponents will be stronger, but we are going to try our best, work and improve what we can and get as far as we can.”
