Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, July 31, 2015 — As the saying goes, defence wins championships. Catholic High proved just that as they defeated defending champions North Vista Secondary 66–51 to clinch the North Zone C Division Basketball Championship title.
The former South Zone champions were led by a 15-point effort from Chua Kai Xuan (#11) and 13 and 12 points from Gideon Lam (#8) and Evan Teh (#10) respectively. North Vista’s Dorian Chin (#9) and Sim Yi (#5) contributed 16 and 14 points respectively in the loss.
Chin (#9) was unstoppable in the paint in the opening quarter, as he dominated the boards and propelled North Vista to an early 18–9 lead.
Catholic High’s duo of Teh (#10) and Chua (#11), however, took over in the second quarter, as their sterling defence robbed North Vista of their momentum. Using their speed to their advantage, Catholic High stormed back with a 20–4 run to take a seven-point lead at the end of the half.
After the break, North Vista had a brief 6–0 run, but this was halted by Catholic High’s backcourt of Justin Lee (#9) and Teh (#10). The pair’s defence helped them to five straight steals off inbound passes for 10 straight points, denying North Vista any opportunity for a comeback.
North Vista had a late run in the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponents 18–15, but Catholic High were able to keep the scores close, eventually sealing the 15-point victory.
