Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, July 31, 2015 — The plays of Mabel Anton (#6) and Patricia Orenza (#7) were the headlines as Singapore Chinese Girls’ School beat Yishun Town Secondary 43–32 to secure their first ever North Zone C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship title.
Orenza (#7) led the former South Zone champions with a game-high 22 points, while Anton (#6) had 16 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Xie Mu Qi (#11) led Yishun Town with 16 points.
The former five-time South Zone champions were in familiar territory, as they took off to an early 7–2 lead. Yishun Town, helped by siblings Nur Afiyah (#5) and Nur Afifah (#8), bounced back to reduce the deficit to a single point.
Fortunately for SCGS, a calm and collected Anton (#6) responded with an eight-point run all on her own, pushing SCGS to a steady 19–8 first quarter lead.
In the following quarter, however, SCGS’ plays were plagued with turnovers, unforced errors and foul trouble. Despite so, Yishun Town were unable to take advantage and capitalize, allowing SCGS to hold their ground.
After the break, it was the heroics of Orenza (#7) that stood out for SCGS, helping them to maintain their hold on the game. Orenza (#7) took over the reins and scored 13 of her team’s 18 points in the frame, eventually sealing the nine-point victory for SCGS.
“We were quite pressurized at first, because we had to maintain the streak of our zonal championships,” said Orenza (#7), SCGS captain.
She added, “I’m really thankful for coach because she always encourages us to calm down and focus and I think that was what helped us win the game. We need to have a winning mindset, and that can help us overcome a lot of games in the upcoming nationals.”
