Singapore Basketball Centre, Thursday, July 2, 2015 — A balanced effort from Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) helped them to a 67–14 victory over Deyi Secondary, giving them their second straight win in the North Zone C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

Four SCGS players managed to score in double digits, with forward Mabel Anton (#6) leading the way with 20 points. Nadia Ghani (#9), Margaret Suriya (#11) and Patricia Orenza (#7) each contributed 13, 11 and 10 points respectively.

Deyi, on the contrary, now hold a 1–1 win-loss record.

SCGS’ full court defensive press tactics worked for them in the first half, as they kept Deyi at bay, holding them to nine points, including just three points in the second quarter.

The story of the second half was similar, as SCGS blitzed overwhelmed Deyi on both ends of the court, forcing multiple turnovers. They held Deyi to just five points in the frame and went on to take the easy 67–14 victory.

“I think our defensive set play was really good, because we didn’t really practise it back in school together as a team. We’d usually practise it separately as Secondary 1s and Secondary 2s, but now on court, the combination went really well,” said SCGS captain Patricia Orenza (#7).

“While we do bear in mind that there are stronger teams, but we don’t really think about how they are and just focus on our own game and plays,” added Nadia Ghani (#9).

“Most importantly, we always try to improve as a team and keep the fighting spirit going.”

SCGS will next face Riverside Secondary while Deyi will go up against Seng Kang Secondary. Both games will be played at the Singapore Basketball Centre on Monday, July 6, at 2 p.m.
