ITE College Central, Sunday, June 14, 2015 — Favourites Singapore added to the country’s gold medal haul after a 9–0 win over Thailand in the final of the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games floorball competition.

Singapore had previously met the Thais in the preliminary rounds and won 4–2. Thailand qualified for the final after their 11–2 win over Philippines the previous evening.

With this win, the Singapore completed the double in floorball after the women’s team had beaten Thailand 2–1 on penalties.

Malaysia men’s team took home the bronze after an 11–3 win over Philippines in the bronze medal match.

Both teams played in front of a 1,200-strong crowd. Some fans were asked to sit on the floor and the steps of the spectator stands because of the small venue.

Neither team managed to find the back of the net until Rashid Jalaluddin (SIN #16) tapped the ball past the Thai keeper.

Thailand’s Onsuk Watcharapon (THA #10) received a two-minute penalty for roughing at the end of the first period and with a one-man advantage at the start of the second period, Singapore went in search of their second goal. This came when a wonderful run by Singapore’s captain, Syazni Ramlee (SIN #25), allowed Alvin Tan (SIN #14) to put the ball pass the Thai keeper’s blind side and extend Singapore’s lead to two goals.

Despite their two-goal deficit, Thailand continued to push the Singapore team and found their own set of opportunities but found their shots saved by Singapore goalie Jay Pal Singh Sidhu (SIN #19).

Thailand’s Srikaew Gorawee (THA #18) received a two-minute penalty for an incorrect hit and Singapore did not take long to convert the advantage. Abdul Hafiz Zubir (SIN #29) found Singapore’s third goal of the night after a well executed play among his line.

After Thailand’s Pimpa Veerasak was given a two-minute penalty for obstruction, Syazni Ramlee (SIN #25) assisted Lim Jian Hong (SIN #70) to find the back of the net, extending Singapore’s lead to four goals.

Singapore dominated possession in the second period after the Thai side received three two-minute penalties within the span of 20 minutes. Singapore led Thailand 4–0 at the end of the second period.

Minutes into the final period, a mistake by the Thai’s defence saw R Suria (SIN #23) add his name to the scorer’s list when he shot the ball accurately between the keeper’s head and left hand. Singapore then widened the goal margin when Captain Syazni Ramlee (SIN #25) assisted Mckenrick Lim (SIN #26) to put the ball pass the keeper, extending Singapore’s lead to six goals.

Singapore had most of the possession in the final period and continued their barrage on both Thai keepers, after Sohtree Auttachai (THA #1) substituted for the starting keeper, Promyart Trasama (THA #15).

Siraaj Ramadhan (SIN #3) found Singapore’s seventh goal despite Singapore having a one-man disadvantage. Captain Syazni Ramlee joined the scorer’s list when he scored a rebound and extended Singapore’s lead to eight goals. Siraaj Ramadhan another goal to his name and score Singapore’s ninth goal of the match.

Despite their speed and aggression, Thailand could not match up to the Singapore team’s excellent teamwork and stick work.
