Kallang Softball Field, Tuesday, June 09, 2015 — Singapore were soundly defeated 10–0 by Philippines in the semi-finals of the women’s softball competition at the 28th Southeast Asia (SEA) Games.

Despite the loss, Singapore can still make the gold medal match if they defeat the winner of the other semi-final in a playoff. Indonesia will face off against Thailand in the other semi-final.

Strong pitching was key for Philippines as they held Singapore scoreless throughout the match. The hard-hitting favourites recorded four runs in quick succession in the first inning before bad weather halted play at the top of the second.

That, however, failed to change the direction of the match as pitcher Veronica Belleza (#1) pitched well to make it hard for Singapore to mount a comeback. They scored another four runs to accumulate an 8–0 lead in the second inning and scored two more to end the match in the fourth inning on the mercy rule.

“Against Philippines, I don’t think anything went wrong in this match,” said Singapore co-captain Cerigwen Ng. “Philippines were the previous champions so this was the expected outcome. We played our best and in our next match, we’ll just do the same.”

Singapore now turn their attention to their next match as they aim to make the final.

“We are full of confidence whoever we play in the next match,” said co-captain Ng. “It does not matter who we play and we do not have a preference. We will do our best and are confident to make the final.”

Singapore will either play Indonesia or Thailand in the playoff on June 9 at 8.30am.
