Sengkang Hockey Stadium, Sunday, June 7, 2015 — After a 7-0 loss to Malaysia yesterday, Singapore gained their first victory with a 1-0 win over Indonesia in the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games women’s hockey tournament.

Singapore started off with a strong offence, gaining four penalty corners within the first 15 minutes. However, the Indonesian defenders closed them down quickly.

Singapore’s ability to switch play from left to right quickly gave them a slight offensive edge over Indonesia, while defensively, they held their ground. As such, they dominated play.

Singapore were unable to capitalise on their many opportunities at goal. After a well-placed through ball found its way past the Indonesian backline, Banuh Nursabrina (#5) failed to tip the ball into an open goal.

The first half concluded in a 0–0 deadlock.

Singapore continued to dominate play in the second half but struggled with their shooting. Off a scoop from Emily Chan (#7), Singapore missed yet another chance when Chua Xinni (#9) failed to reach the ball in time.

Singapore had at least a total of 10 penalty corners in the game but none came to fruition, until the breakthrough in the 66th minute. A goalmouth scramble ensued after a penalty corner, and Banuh Nursabrina (#5) pushed the ball in to seal the win for Singapore.

On her goal, Banuh said, “After the goal, it was a proud moment. We actually secured a goal and the three points we needed to fight for the gold medal. Other than that, it was really fighting spirit with the team and it was a really awesome feeling.”

Her captain, Chua Xinni (#9), commented, “It was a hard-fought win. I think we struggled a bit to try to get the goals.”

Singapore will next play against Thailand on June 9, 7.15pm, at Sengkang Hockey Stadium.
