Kallang Softball Field, Saturday, June 06, 2015 – Singapore defeated Malaysia 15–0 in their first match of the women’s softball group stage at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. They finished the match in just three innings after accumulating a 15-run advantage by the end of the third to beat Malaysia on the mercy rule.
Singapore’s starting pitcher Zesa Chen performed outstandingly in the first two innings. She also struck out a couple of Malaysian players to allow Singapore to maintain their substantial lead.
“I told myself to take one pitch at a time and told the team to take one play at a time,” said Zesa Chen. “My pitching was not as sharp as expected but the movement of the ball was still going so it was manageable. For the next few games, it needs to be sharper because we’re up against power hitters like Indonesia and Thailand.”
“We are just taking one game at a time but for the first round, we are working towards beating Thailand and Indonesia. That is the bare minimum we’re working towards,” added Zesa.
On the offensive end, Ching Sue Mae’s run was the only score for Singapore in the first inning, but the second saw the home team pour in 10 runs. Singapore scored another four at the top of the third before holding Malaysia to end the match on the mercy rule.
“We were a little excited because we have been waiting very long to play our first match. I think to improve, we will need to play more at our own pace,” commented Yan Guo, Singapore’s shortstop. “When we rush, the chances of making mistakes are higher so we need to be more composed in the coming matches.”
Singapore will next play the Philippines on June 6, 4.15pm, at the Kallang Softball Field.
