Sengkang Hockey Stadium, Saturday, June 6, 2015 – Singapore lost 0—7 to defending champions Malaysia in their opening match of the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games women’s hockey tournament.

Singapore finished fourth in the 2013 SEA Games, losing to Myanmar in the bronze medal match.

Malaysia dominated possession and scored their first goal in the 15th minute. Two more goals followed, with Sylvester S. Fazilla (#19) scoring the fourth Malaysian goal in the final second.

Singapore weathered two penalty corners within five minutes of the start of the second half but there was no stopping Malaysia from adding another four goals.

With regard to Singapore’s performance, Laura Tan (#16) said, “I think we didn’t perform our best, we could’ve done better. Our team took off with a pretty nervous start and it took us a while to settle down.”

“We were just trying to play hockey. We didn’t just want to sit back and absorb everything that came at us, but we kind of wanted to play our game as well. So we went in with the mentality to be confident and play our game. We know that they are good opponents but we wanted to be confident and just play,” Laura added.

About their mistakes, Laura said, “There were moments of lapses of concentration, but here and there, I think it was just the nerves that got to us from the start.”

She added, “The team in the first half was a little bit shaky and we had problems getting through to each other. but I think in the second half we were much better and we could hear each other. Malaysia is a very experienced and very senior team. And honestly, it is not like we get a lot of chances. But we know there are a few and we just want to make them count.”

Singapore will next play Indonesia on Sunday, June 7, 7.15pm.
