Jalan Besar Stadium, Thursday, June 4, 2015 — Singapore lost 1–2 to Myanmar in the Southeast Asian (SEA) games under-23 football tournament.

The game turned on a Singapore goalkeeping error. An innocent-looking free kick from distance by Ye Ko Oo (#21) flew over Syazwan Buhari (#24) who misjudged the bounce.

This is their first loss after an opening 1–0 win over Philippines earlier this week. For Myanmar, this is their second win in a row, after they beat Indonesia 4–2 in their opening game.

Myanmar got themselves on the score sheet first from a free kick. Shakir Hamzah (#2) gave away a free kick outside the penalty box on the right flank. No Singapore defender challenged the incoming free kick, the ball landed at the feet of a grateful Tun Nay Lin (#8), and he bundled it past a stranded Syazwan Buhari (#24) in goal.

Sahil Suhaimi (#7), who also had two chances in the opening 15 minutes, then saw his effort on goal charged down in the 28th minute.

Singapore finally got their equaliser in the 32nd minute. Phyo Ko Ko Thein (#14) handled the ball in the penalty box from a Shakir Hamzah cross. Pho Kway Zin (#1) guessed the right way but Faris Ramli’s (#10) penalty was too powerful and accurate for him to stop.

Coming out of the half-time break at 1–1, Singapore almost went ahead within the minute when Pravin Gunasagran (#12) hit a stiff shot from outside the box that just missed the left upright.

The home crowd raised a cheer when Irfan Fandi (#17) came on in place of Safirul Sulaiman (#28) but the mood turned dark within minutes.

Pravin got a yellow card for a challenge and the resulting free kick seemed far away enough not to cause worry. However, Ye Ko Oo (#21) delivered a wickedly spinning shot that took a bounce which fooled Syazwan in goal and the ball bounced over him into goal for a 2–1 Myanmar lead.

A Faris shot from outside the box saw the Myanmar keeper bundle it out. Then Irfan finally got the ball into the net in the 73rd minute but the referee ruled that Irfan had barged into the goalie.

The frustration on Irfan’s face at having the goal ruled out was matched by the rain pouring down in the closing minutes of the game.

In the 80th minute, a chance fell to Sahil Suhaimi (#7) after the Myanmar defender slipped. However, Sahil could only blaze the ball high and wide.

Deep into injury time, Irfan rose high again but his glancing header whizzed past the right upright.

Singapore next play Cambodia on Monday, June 8. Cambodia beat Philippines 3–1 in their opening game earlier.
