Serangoon Stadium, Friday, May 23, 2015 — Raffles Institution (RI) defeated Jurong Junior College (JJC) 5–2 to clinch bronze in the National A Division Girls’ Football Championship.
This is Jurong’s first time qualifying for top four. RI finished second in last year’s edition.
“We’ve really made history in our school. It is really a big feat (to come this far) and we are very proud to be a part of the team that made this happen,” said JJC vice-captain, Amarthavalli (#18).
With RI dominating play, the game was contained in JJC’s half. RI midfielders put up a strong defence to prevent JJC from entering RI’s six-yard box. This gave JJC fewer opportunities at goal.
Beatrice Yip (#17) of RI scored the opening goal midway through the first half. RI then scored another goal through Simone Sim (#3) within three minutes to extend their lead to 2–0.
JJC were desperately trying to find an answer against RI’s defensive press. Sandra Yu (JJC #17) eventually responded with a well-placed shot past the goalkeeper to trail 1–2 going into the halftime break.
RI continued attacking relentlessly in the second half. Simone Sim (RI #3) managed to score her second goal with an assist from K Keerthana (RI #7).
JJC’s goalkeeper (#1) deflected a shot from Beatrice Yip (RI #17). However, her dive left the goalpost unguarded against K Keerthana (RI #7) who slid a shot in for RI’s fourth goal.
Despite trailing 1–4, JJC continued working on their attacks which paid off with Amarthavalli (JJC #18) scoring their second goal.
However, they were unable to narrow the score deficit. Beatrice Yip (RI #17) scored the last goal of the match, through to the bottom right of the net to seal RI’s 5–2 victory.
RI captain, Victoria Goh (#10), said, “The match was really intense. JJC put up a really strong fight and we would like to thank them for it. Our team has trained very hard for this victory and it would not have been possible without our coach, Mr Leong, Mr Man and our teachers in-charge.”
On her thoughts for the season, Victoria added, “Every match was a hard-earned victory, and every match was extremely intense for us. We are so glad to have come this far.”
JJC captain, Nadiah Bte Sa’it (#9), said, “We may have started a little off (out usual standards) but everyone put in effort. We definitely played better than our other games and managed to put up a good fight until the end.”
“We started off very strong, but in between we experienced several ups and downs. We are proud of our team that we managed to finish strong and end off the season on a good note. We would like to thank our coach who pushed us on and we would not have achieved this without him,” added Amarthavalli (JJC #18).
