Singapore Sports School, Friday, April 24, 2015 — With a timing of 3 minutes and 40.62 seconds, Singapore Sports School’s quartet of Gabriel Tan (#101), Mohamed Zulkhairi (#108), Nurshahilman Noradee (#109) and Hazim Ismail (#110) topped the C Division boys’ 4x400m relay field for the gold medal at the 56th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships.
The four, who are used to running longer distances, had earlier clocked a timing of 3:52.02 in the heats to qualify as the second fastest team behind Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), who topped the heats with a timing of 3:48.10.
Hazim, who ran the second leg, said, “It feels great to win the race, because we’re also running on home ground, which is to our advantage. We managed to run faster today, because there were a lot of supporters around to cheer us on.”
Tan’s strong start pushed Singapore Sports School to the lead right from the start of the race, and the quartet eventually finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of HCI, who finished second in 3:49.98. St. Joseph’s Institution took home the bronze medal with a timing of 3:57.36.
“Running the 400 metres is a much easier race for us, because we are used to running longer distances such as the 800 metres, which is more tiring,” added anchor runner Zulkhairi.
Nurshahilman said, “We have quite a few good runners in the team, so it’s really great. We really want to thank our coach, our families and friends out there for their help and support.”
The quartet’s victory helped Singapore Sports School clinch a third-placed finish in the divisional rankings with a total of 108 points. Hwa Chong Institution and Raffles Institution finished first and second with 181 and 166 points respectively.
