Singapore Sports School, Friday, April 24, 2015 — Raffles Institution’s (RI) quartet of Damien Kee (#135), Mark Llewellyn Lim (#149), Calvin Quek (#152) and Ringo Han (#154) combined to clock a timing of 3 minutes and 27.56 seconds to clinch the A Division boys’ 4x400m relay title at the 56th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships.

The four boys came into the final with the second fastest qualifying time of 3:36.25, behind Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), who clocked a time of 3:33.98.

“We’re really happy because that’s our aim from the start,” said Han, RI’s runner on the third leg.

“We were also thinking about the divisional title. We were just four points behind Hwa Chong prior to the race so we wanted to do our best to win this race and catch up to them, and let nature do its part.”

Kee, who ran the second leg for RI, said, “Before the race, we were ready to make our last stand, end on a high, and give something for the team to cheer for. We weren’t actually thinking of the timing and we just came here to give a good fight to our competitors.”

Despite sustaining a hamstring pull prior to the race, Quek stayed on to compete and his start gave RI a 10-metre lead ahead of the pack, which his teammates duly held for the victory.

HCI completed the race in 3:31.15 to clinch the silver medal, while Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) bagged the bronze medal with a timing of 3:34.04.

Despite their victory in the National Inter-School Track and Field Championships’ final event, RI were unable to clinch the A Division boys’ challenge trophy, which went to HCI. RI finished with 225 total points, just two points shy of HCI, while VJC’s 70 points helped them to the third place.

Han said, “I think we fought to the very end, and there is nothing to be ashamed of.”
