Bukit Gombak Stadium, Monday, April 20, 2015 — Leading from start to finish, Raffles Institution’s (RI) Tan Chong Qi (#158) struck gold in the A Division boys’ 3,000m steeplechase final at the 56th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships. He clocked a timing of 10 minutes and 29.34 seconds, rounding off his season with one gold and two silvers.

Chong Qi said, “It is a mixed feeling. While I am happy that I came in first place, I did not hit my expectations in terms of my timing.”

“I had initially expected myself to be able to hit a timing of below ten minutes but I had a momentarily lost of focus halfway through the race and started to slow down, which consequently affected my results.”

Glen Palmer (#195) from Victoria Junior College clinched silver in 10:34.18, and bronze went to teammate Edward Lee (#200) who finished in 10:38.09.

While Chong Qi had an extending lead for the whole race, Glen and Edward only established their final standings in the last few minutes. With 600m more to go, Edward overtook defending champion Leroi Lee (#226) of Anglo-Chinese Junior College. However, Glen was hot on Edward’s heels, and his last surge on the back straight saw him take silver, leaving Edward with the bronze.

Before this victory, Chong Qi had already obtained two silvers – one from the A Division boys’ 5000m final, and the other at the 56th National Inter-Schools Cross Country Championships. He was also last year’s B Division boys’ 2000m steeplechase and 3000m champion.
