CHIJ Toa Payoh, Tuesday, April 7, 2015 — CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) led through all four quarters to beat River Valley High School (RVHS) 45–18 for their second win in the second round of the National B Division Netball Championship.

The win improved CHIJ(TP)’s win-loss record to 2–0. The 2014 runners-up defeated Anderson 39–29 in their earlier match last Thursday. On the other hand, River Valley fall to a 0-2 win-loss record after going down 24-31 to Singapore Sports School.

CHIJ(TP) extended their domination in the first half by executing their chances well with their high passes to their Goal Shooter, Tan Yin Yun. She played a vital role in pacing her team’s offensive plays with her high conversion rate. Her shot accuracy in the first quarter allowed her team to pull away 15–6 going into the first timeout.

River Valley struggled to keep up but eventually managed to score goals after capitalising on several defensive rebounds made by their Goal Attack and Goal Shooter. Through several CHIJ(TP) turnovers, River Valley were able to convert on offence to score five goals to trail 11–23 by half time.

CHIJ’s passes were mostly long high-ball passes which were accurate and swift, restricting the ability of RV to intercept and score. Despite building up a comfortable lead, they did not let their guard down. Instead, they worked even harder to increase their lead to 23 points by the final timeout with great teamwork.

Yin Yun (GS) of CHIJ kicked off the third quarter with three consecutive points to bring their lead to 26–11 before RV’s GS responded with a goal of her own. CHIJ continued their scoring streak towards the end of the third quarter with five unanswered goals.

In the final quarter, CHIJ continued to dominate possession despite a change in their attacking lineup. However, River Valley were more coordinated towards the end of the final quarter and played a much better game, effectively pressuring the CHIJ shooters.

Zania Tan (GK) of River Valley managed to intercept the ball on several occasions which allowed them to pot in consecutive goals to narrow the deficit in the final quarter. Nevertheless, it was CHIJ’s strong first-half effort that helped them to the eventual 45–18 victory.

River Valley’s captain, Faith Yao, said, “We fought hard today. Our defenders tried to intercept their passes and our attackers tried to hold off the CHIJ defenders.”

“Our next match will be up against Anderson. We will definitely give our all for our last match!” she added.

CHIJ TP will next take on Singapore Sports School at 12 p.m., while RVHS will face Anderson Secondary at 1 p.m. Both games will take place at CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) on Thursday, April 9.
