CHIJ Toa Payoh, Thursday, April 2, 2015 — Singapore Sports School (SSP) rode a strong second-half effort to defeat River Valley High (RVHS) 31–24 in the second round of the National B Division Netball Championship.

Both teams were neck-and-neck, maintaining their centre-pass possession and took turns to score in the first few minutes of the quarter. However, SSP players held on to their momentum and took the early advantage with good ball movement around the court to grab the 6–5 lead going into the first timeout.

RVHS’s Goal Attack, Adeline, played a vital role in pacing her team’s offensive plays with her high conversion rate. Her shot accuracy in the second quarter allowed RVHS to pull away 15–14 going into the half time break. She contributed seven goals in this quarter.

However, the lead did not remain with RVHS. SSP charged back at the start of the third quarter as they stepped up their defence in the goal third, which proved effective as the RVHS players faced difficulty in bring the ball down to their shooters. The equaliser (17–17) came seven minutes into the quarter, when SSP’s teamwork and accurate Goal Shooter carried out a successful conversion.

SSP never looked back from then on. They continued with their momentum and set themselves up for more interceptions, and gradually established a four-point lead (21–17) in the third quarter.

RVHS were first to get onto the scoresheet in the final quarter. Their defenders continued to put up a strong fight in an attempt to upset SSP’s flow and composure. However, the SSP players were determined to keep the hard-earned lead they built in the third quarter and retaliated with commendable team effort.

SSP’s Goal Shooter opened the scoring for her team and her good shooting allowed her team to race off to an early 6–1 scoring run. RVHS made a valiant attempt to reduce the deficit in the final few minutes of the match but SSP held their ground to seal the game 31–24 winners.

SSP will next take on Anderson Secondary at 2 p.m., while RVHS will face CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) at 12 p.m. Both games will take place at CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) on Tuesday, April 7.
