CHIJ Toa Payoh, Thursday, April 2, 2015 — St. Margaret’s Secondary (SMS) defeated Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) 33–27 in the second round of the National B Division Netball Championship.

The first quarter saw SMS displaying strong passes and swift movements on court, while the MGS defenders worked hard to stop their opponents’ offensive momentum. SMS led 8–5 at the end of the first quarter.

It was point for point from the start of the second quarter. SMS’s Goal Defence, Farhana, held the fort in the goal third and forced many MGS turnovers for her team to attempt more shots. However, it was MGS’s accurate shooting and composure that helped them to outscore SMS 7–2 by half time.

While MGS were patient with their passes, SMS defenders were tenacious in challenging each pass. SMS shooters, Chloe and Sara, matched their defenders’ efforts by making their attempts count to add 15 points to the scoreboard. Both shooters manage to shake off their defenders to reach open spaces and convert efficiently in the goal circle.

Going into the third and final break, SMS extended their lead to 25–17.

Just as the game seemed to be over, MGS fired themselves up in the final minutes of the game. MGS Goal Shooter, Amandeep, contributed greatly to the 10 goals scored in this quarter which helped her team to narrow the score gap. The MGS defenders also made several interceptions at midcourt to limit SMS’s offensive prowess.

A successful shot by SMS GA before the final whistle blew wrapped up the final 33–27 win.

SMS captain, Jane Yu, said, “I think we could have minimised on some of our mistakes made on court today. However, we did put up a better fight towards the end of third quarter and kept it going from there.”

SMS will next take on Nanyang Girls’ High at 1 p.m., while MGS will face Raffles Girls’ School at 3 p.m. Both games will take place at CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) on Tuesday, April 7.
